I can see digital storytelling as a very useful tool in education. Initially, I thought that this would be a tool that would primarily be used in an English or Language Arts class. But, as I read more, I could increasingly see how digital storytelling could be implemented in a science classroom. Although I do think that you would have to be selective in implementing storytelling (as with any activity or technology), I can see how this would be effective in differentiating a performance assessment in the science classroom. Some examples of this are using digital storytelling to describe the function of a cell or depicting how the digestive system contributes to overall human function. I like the idea that digital storytelling can promote creativity and engagement as identified by Microsoft's article Tell a Story, Become a Lifelong Learner. Digital storytelling also promotes literacy and digital citizenship.
Educational uses of DigitalStorytelling identifies that digital storytelling can also be an instructional tool for teachers to introduce a variety of concepts. This can also rejuvenate student engagement. The article also identifies that students can have the opportunity to share their work with peers and can gain some experience in editing and critiquing other students work in a positive light. This, overall, develops communication skills.
I think that this is an interesting technology to use in the classroom and it could be effective in engaging learners with proper implementation.
